M/Sgt. Walter A. "Ski" Gronkoski, 79, of Biloxi, MS, died Wednesday, January 30, 2013, in Biloxi.
Beloved father and husband leaves his family with much love and compassion. Ski was known for his great sense of humor and ability to make everyone laugh at any time. He was a proud member of the U. S. Air Force and held the rank of Master Sergeant when retired. During his service Ski was awarded the Soldier’s Medal for Valor, only given to those who have risked their lives to save others in a non-combat situation. Ski jumped onto a missile with flames from the ignited fuel threatening to explode and take out half the base, and reached into the fire to turn off the fuel valve, saving many! He received many meritious awards and citations during his military tenure.
His bravery was second only to his generosity. He would never turn away from someone in need. After his military service Ski worked at Ingalls Ship Building as an electronics tech.
Ski leaves behind an extended family with a loving wife, Ann Gronkoski; sons, Robert, Ron and Gene; daughters, Susie, Edie and Meredith; and plenty of grandkids and great grandkids, all of who will miss him dearly!
Visitation will be 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2013, at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, 2511 Pass Road, in Biloxi. A procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. for graveside services at 10:00 a.m. at Biloxi National Cemetery with full military honors.
