Max Wendell Thornton, Sr., 75, of Gulfport, died Friday, July 29, 2011 in Gulfport.
Wendell was born February 24, 1936 and was a 1954 graduate of Edinburg High School. He received his BS and Masters degree from MS State University. He began his teaching career of 38 years as a drafting teacher at Harrison Central High School in Lyman. Wendell continued as a Vo-Tech guidance counselor at Pearl River Community College, and for 30 years at Jeff Davis Community College of MGCCC as a guidance counselor, assistant director and Dean of the Vo-Tech department.
Wendell was preceded in death by his parents, Mahlon and Vera Thornton; his brother, Dennis Thornton; and sister Elaine Kelley. He leaves behind his wife LaVerne Thornton of Gulfport; his sons, Max Wendell (Theresa) Thornton of Carthage, MS and William Michael (Susan) Thornton of Saucier; and grandchildren, Grady Scott Thornton, Brittany and Kandace Thornton.
Services will be held Monday, August 1, 2011 at 2:00pm at Wilcox Funeral Home in Carthage, MS where friends may visit one hour prior to service time. Interment will be in Edinburg Cemetery, Edinburg, MS.
