Melvin Smith

Mr. Melvin Smith, Sr. age 74,, of Ocean Springs, MS., died Monday, August 27, 2012, in Ocean Springs. Mr. Smith was a native and lifelong resident of Ocean Springs. He was employed with the Gulf Coast Research Lab in Ocean Springs for 34 years and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church under the late Reverend P.D. House. Mr. Smith enjoyed playing golf and fishing and was a dedicated father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Ida Mae Rogers Smith, parents, Johnny and Sally Quinn Smith, and a daughter, Sally Ann Smith. Survivors include four daughters, Florence (Dennis) Mathis of Biloxi, Tracy (Alexander) Moore of Ocean Springs, Christine (Joe) Brown of Ocean Springs and Sherlette (Willie) Heard of Las Vegas, five sons, Raymond (Sandra) Smith of Clarksville, TN, Scottie Rogers, Melvin Smith Jr., Levert Smith and Tony Smith, all of Ocean Springs, two sisters, Christine Smith of New Castle, Delaware and Jeannette Smith of Ocean Springs, five brothers, Calvin Smith of Brooklyn, NY, James Smith of Mobile, Harry Smith of Charlotte, SC, Grady Smith of Jackson and Raymond Smith of Ocean Springs, seventeen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Visitation will be on Saturday, September 1, 2012, from 9:30 am - 2 pm, with a 2 pm church service, all at Macedonia Baptist Church in Ocean Springs. Burial will follow in Crestlawn Memorial Park. The Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
