Michael Joseph Sekul, 55, of Biloxi, MS, died Saturday, March 19, 2011, at his home in Biloxi. Mr. Sekul was a native and longtime resident of Biloxi, the son of the late Mike and Frances Mihojevich Sekul. He was of the Catholic faith and was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church. Michael graduated from Biloxi High School in 1974, where he excelled in football as a quarterback for the Biloxi Indians. He was an all Big Eight selection, and was named Most Outstanding Player in Biloxi's 1972 victory in the Meninack Bowl and Most Outstanding Player in the 1973 Shrimp Bowl. Although he received several major college football scholarship offers, Michael chose Perkinston Junior College to continue his education and football notoriety. As a backup quarterback his freshman year, the Bulldogs won the Mississippi Junior College State Championship. As starting quarterback his sophomore year, he led the Bulldogs to a South Division Championship and ten win season. One of his most impressive football statistics as a Bulldog quarterback is his passing completion percentate (63%, 103 completed from 163 attempted - 1975.) During his junior and senior years as a quarterback for the Southwest Oklahoma University Bulldogs, he was an All Conference Quarterback. His senior year he was an NAIA First Team All American, leading his team to an eleven and one record. After working in Oklahoma two years he returned to Biloxi and worked in the family seafood business. He is survived by the love of his life, Mary Eaves, of Biloxi; his daughter, Francena Rose Sekul of Biloxi; his sister, Chee Sekul Garringer of Ocean Springs; and his brothers, "Rock" Sekul of Ocean Springs, and S. George Sekul of Biloxi. Michael loved fishing and spending time with Mary and his daughter on his houseboat. He enjoyed life to the fullest. He was loved by many and will be deply missed. In lieu of flowers the family prefers donations to St. Michaels Grotto Fund, 177 First St., Biloxi, MS 39530, or the Mike Sekul Scholarship Fund, c/o MGCC Foundation, Perkinston, MS 39573 A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Michaels Catholic Church where friends may visit from from 10 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow in Southern Memorial Park. Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, Howard Avenue, in Biloxi is in charge of services.
