“Never fly the A model of anything.” — WWII pilot Ed Thompson
Never one to take advice, Michael Stout flew his own “A model” in 2008 in his beloved Sonex aircraft, which he hand-built in his retirement, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Sadly, Michael passed away suddenly on Wednesday, August 29, 2018.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island on November 1, 1946, he had a lifelong passion for aviation and took his first flying lesson at age 16. He was past president of the Fort Payne, Alabama Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA chapter 890) and volunteer mentor for their Young Eagles program. He was also a member of the Ocean Springs Yacht Club.
A resident of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, he was a graduate of NYU with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Geography. He retired as a Lieutenant from the US Navy after 23 years of service in 1988.
Michael is predeceased by his fun-loving parents; Henry Stout, USN, and Kathleen O’Rourke, RN, as well as his bigger-than-life brother, Mark Stout.
Survivors include his “attached-at-the-hip/partner-in-crime” wife of 28 years, Patsy Worley Stout with whom he enjoyed many travels and adventures. He shared two children, Laura Stout LaTour and Noel Stout with his first wife, Valerie Lapierre Stout, and two step-children, Dana Lepre and Christa Lepre York. He shared friendship with his two sons-in-law, John LaTour and Benjamin York. He also had three grandchildren; Henry and Harper LaTour and Turner York. He is also survived by his brothers Tom Stout and Tim Stout.
Michael was smart, adventurous, fun-loving, and loved to travel the world. He left an impression (good or bad) with everyone he met.
Visitation will be held at Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home in Ocean Springs, MS on Sunday, September 2 from 1-3 PM, concluding with a brief prayer service. A celebration of his life will follow at the Ocean Springs Yacht Club on Front Beach. Everyone who knew him is welcome to attend both.
In lieu of flowers, Michael would appreciate donations to the Young Eagles Program, in care of Kim, EAA Chapter 890, 2200 Terminal Drive, Fort Payne NW, Alabama, 35968.
