Mildred Lorene Gunderson, 89, of Ocean Springs, MS went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, February 4, 2012. Mrs. Gunderson, known and loved as “Gunny” celebrated her 89th birthday on November 5, 2011. She was born in Blue Field, WV, but spent most of her life in Biloxi and later moved to Ocean Springs in 1997. Mrs. Gunderson and her husband owned and operated Gunderson’s Shell Service in Biloxi until retirement in 1990. She was a former member of the Pilot Club of Biloxi and a member of the Ocean Springs Circle of the International Order of the Kings Daughters and Sons. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Ocean Springs. Gunny was an inspiration to all that knew her. Her generosity was endless. Her love for her family was a very special gift to all of us.
Mrs. Gunderson is preceded in death by her husband, Norman L. Gunderson; parents, Thomas J. and Anna Lorene Mailes.
She is survived by a daughter, Ann Gunderson Harvey and son-in-law, Phil Harvey; three grandchildren, Philip Harvey, Jr. (Michell), Elizabeth “Beth” Joachim (Craig) and David Harvey (Jennifer); six great-grandchildren, Megan Harvey, Morgan Joachim, Connor Joachim, Adelle Harvey, Emmy Harvey and Sutton Harvey; brother, Norman E. (Billy) Mailes and several nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to the staff and her friends at the Gardens Assisted Living, the nursing staff on 3 East at Ocean Springs Hospital, Camellia Home Health and Hospice and special caregivers, Barbara Ferguson, Gloria Broome, Barbara Ann Bullock and Karla Byrd.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Downtown Campus of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until service time. Interment will follow in Southern Memorial Park.
