Mitchell Anthony Abide

Mitchell Anthony Abide passed away in Covington, La. on February 10, 2010, one month before his 89th birthday. Mr. Abide was born in Greenville on March 10, 1921 to Melham and Bonda Abide. He was the sixth of nine children. He graduated from Greenville High School and LSU where he received a degree in mechanical engineering. During World War II, he served as an Army Air Corps navigator in the Pacific Theater. With his brothers, Mr. Abide founded Abide Lumber Company. He also worked as an engineer at U.S. Gypsum until retirement. He enjoyed golfing every day, particularly with his Wednesday afternoon group. Mr. Abide was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Patricia, who died ten days earlier. Mr. Abide is survived by two sons, Peter (Judy) Abide of Biloxi, and Mitch (Jane) Abide of Covington, La.; two daughters, Leah (Sandy) Whann of New Orleans, and Mary (Brian) Negus of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and eleven grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, P.O. Box 1220, Greenville, MS 38702. A memorial service and Catholic Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Greenville on Saturday, February 20 at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow. Visitation will be held at the church at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lake Village under the direction of Bishop Funeral Home.
