Myrtis Coon Green, age 93, of Ocean Springs, MS., passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2006, in Ocean Springs.
Myrtis was born on November 3, 1912, in Lincoln County, Mississippi. She was the oldest of three daughters born to John C. Coon and Ida Mae James Coon. She lived in the logging camps of southwest Mississippi in her youth where her father worked as a barber. She graduated from William Carey College in 1931, at the age of 19, and began a 46 year teaching career. She taught in the public schools of Green (McLain) and Perry (New Augusta) counties before ending her career as an instructor of English Literature at Jones County Junior College in Ellisville in 1977. She moved to Ocean Springs in 1984 with her mother to be near her daughter and grandchildren. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ocean Springs.
Myrtis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Johnie W. Green, two infant children, and one sister, Mrs. Gordon C. Payne of Lucedale, MS.
She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Irene C. Gross of Iuka, MS., a daughter, Mrs. Betty (Donald) Smith of Ocean Springs, MS., granddaughter, Major Amanda (Nathan) Myers of Maxwell AFB, Alabama, grandson, Skylin C. Smith of Ocean Springs, MS., two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Saturday, April 29, 2006, from 4-6 PM, with a brief service at 5 PM, at the Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home. On Sunday, April 30, 2006, there will be a 2 PM graveside service at the McLain Cemetery in McLain, MS.
