Nellie L. O'Gorman of Gulfport died April 15, 2011 in Gulfport. She was born on May 23, 1915, to James and Elmira Lee of Wortham, MS, the oldest of six children. She attended Lyman High School and graduated Valedictorian of her class, then graduated from Perkinston Jr. College and the University of Southern Mississippi. She taught school for three years in Bunker Hill, MS. She then worked for MS State Employment Service in Picayune, M,. while working there during the early years of WWII, she joined the American Red Cross as a volunteer, and eventually decided to accept a more active role in the Red Cross and applied for overseas service. After training in Washington, she was assigned to the social work staff of Army and Navy hospitals in Germany and Salzburg, Austria. This assignment lasted for over six years, when she returned to the States and continued working for the Red Cross in Army hospitals for several years. In 1951 she returned to Gulfport and was employed as a secretary to the Manager of United Gas Corporation. While working there she met and married Raymond W. O'Gorman. After Hurricane Camille, the VA hospital where he was employed temporarily closed and they moved to Glasgow, Kentucky where he continued his practice of medicine until his death in 1984. She continued to live in Glasgow, a place she loved very much until 2003, when due to poor health she returned to Gulfport to be near her family. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Glasgow. During the years she lived there she was President of her Sunday School class, President of the Clara Rayburn Circle, member of serveral bridge clubs and was a member of and served on the board of the Glasgow Musicale, a National Organization of music clubs.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, James B. Lee and Robert A. Lee, one sister, Joyce Lee Cobb.
She is survived by two sisters, Kate King and Theresa Moncrief, a number of nieces and nephews and a step-grandson of whom she was very fond, Niall Brannigan.
Funeral Services Wednesday, April 20, 2011, 2:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Glasgow, KY, with visitation one hour prior at the church. Interment will follow in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery.
