Nelly Rhodes, age 85, of Gulfport, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, died Sunday, May 27, 2007 in Gulfport.
Mrs. Rhodes was preceded in death by her husband, Farley E. Rhodes, who was a past appointed sheriff in Harrison County; her mother, Carmen Barralt Quiros, her father, Tulio Quiros; and her sister, Violetta Bounds.
She is survived by her two daughters, Theresa Rhodes Liner of Gulfport and Barbara Rhodes Friday of Point Richmond, CA; her son-in-law, Steven Friday of Point Richmond, CA; three grandchildren, Michelle McNair of Gulfport, Sonya Sigler and her husband, Jeff Sigler of Gulfport and Mark Liner who is currently in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and five great-grandchildren, Kayla Liner, Laurell Sigler, Mariah Wallace, Tristen Liner, and Joseph Wallace.
Mrs. Rhodes was a proud naturalized citizen born in the Dominican Republic and grew up and attended school in Brookland, NY. She was a graduate of Huntington College, VA. Mrs. Rhodes was a veteran of the United States Navy and worked in Intelligence during World War II. Speaking three languages, she worked as an interpreter and radio operator. She was a retired federal employee of the CBC Base in Gulfport where she served as EOC Officer for several years.
Mrs. Rhodes was a member in good standing at First Baptist Church of Gulfport where she was in the Women's Missionary Union.
Mrs. Rhodes was a past member of Toast Masters International, the Gulfport Garden Club where she served a term as president, the Gulfport Women's Club where she served a term as president and the Friends of the Library in Harrison County.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 4, 2007 at 11:30 a.m. at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, O'Neal Road, Gulfport where friends may visit from 10:30 a.m. until the serviuce. Interment will follow in Biloxi National Cemetery, Biloxi.
