Patricia E. Mathews of Gulfport, passed away Sunday, September 4, 2011 peacefully in her sleep. She was as she stated, living with terminal colon cancer. She was born in Birmingham, AL on February 5, 1942. She moved to Mobile, AL in 1965 where she met her husband, Condie Mathews.
In 1967 Pat and Condie moved to Laurel, MS. She was a member of the Laurel Jaycettes and First United Methodist Church. There she met her longtime best friend, Mary Margaret Lawhon.
Pat enjoyed a lifelong love of gardening and working with her plants. She enjoyed and received much pleasure from her thirteen cats especially her main cat Tippy. She enjoyed flea markets, yard sales, and at one time owned P & C Treasures in Gulfport. She was the co-owner (with her husband) of Harbor Tax Service, LLC, of Saucier and Pipe Dreams, LLC. She enjoyed camping and when in Laurel helped start a National Hikers and Campers club. She was planning a camping trip at the time of her death.
Pat was a member of the Edgewater Christian Fellowship Church in Biloxi. and was a member of the ECFC Ladies. Up until the time of her illness she served the ECFC as church hostess and made the flower arrangements for the church.
She was preceded in death by her mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Donald Mabry, and her father, Charles Lindsey Bowman, Jr.
Pat is survived by her husband of 44 years, Condie N. Mathews, Jr. Their 45th anniversary would have been September 10, 2011. She is also survived by a son, John K. Mathews (Stacy) of Petal; her daughter Cheryl (Ken) and her adopted grandchildren, Ethan Kelly Mathews and Emily Nicole Mathews (Cheryl's children) all of Gulfport; her brothers, Charles Bowman (Linda), Robert Mabry (Joy), and Edward Mabry (Frieda) all of Mobile, AL.
The family thanks the doctors, nurses and staff at the Memorial Hospital Cancer Center for their loving care and concern for my wife, her children's mother and grandmother. We are especially thankful and grateful for her physician Dr, Pamela Tuli.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, 15th Street, Gulfport where friends may visit beginning at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Gulfport.
