Robert Dean Cain

Robert Cain passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family on November 20, 2016 in Gulfport, MS at the age of 88. Robert was born on April 27, 1928 in Sarepta, MS. He served in the United States Army achieving the rank of Corporal during the Korean War. During this time he earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. After serving in the military he returned to his hometown to work on the family farm. In 1955, he relocated to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and was employed at the Gulfport Veterans Affairs hospital for almost 30 years. After retirement he returned to his passion of farming. Friends and family called him Dean and all grandchildren and great-grandchildren called him “Paw-Paw”. Regardless of what you called him, he was a wonderful and loving father figure. His family and his farm were the two passions in his life. There was never a shortage of stories and fresh food from his farm. He was a man of few words but his words and guidance were profound. With a large stature and big heart he was the epitome of strength. He led by example, instilling in all, strong values, honesty, integrity and the importance of family. Everyone that knew and loved him will carry the memory of his big heart and the lessons he taught us. We can only hope that small part will be enough to fill the void that has been left in his passing. We say goodbye with love, respect, and gratitude. He was preceded in death by his parents, Barney and Emma Cain; brothers, Hubert Cain, Deward Cain, Willie Cain, Elvis Cain, and Jim Cain; sisters, Vera Poynor, Agnes Webster, Shirldean Creech, and Geraldine Daniel. He is survived by three daughters, Retia Cain, Judy (David) Kleinman and Susan (Rusty) Bell all of Gulfport; ten grandchildren, Guy (Rebecca) Guidry, Emily Webber, Jeenna (Chad) Brunn, Renee (Shawn) Butler, Bo (Jordan) Bell, Cain (Jourdana) Webber, Jay Bell, Mary Catherine (Brandon) Dennis, Jacqueline (Tracy) Boswell and Sabrina Kleinman; seven great-grandchildren, Brooklynn and Braden Montana, Logan and Olivia Butler, Julian Guidry, Easton Brunn, and Josiah Boswell. Memorials may be sent to Fisher House of Mississippi, 800-732-2984. Visitation will be Friday, November 25, 2016 from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home, 15th Street, Gulfport.
