Being in the USAF for 28 years, Bob traveled many places, served in the Korean War, and eventually retired at Keesler AFB in 1979. Even though the Gulf Coast was not Bob’s home, he was proud to say, “I got here as soon as I could.” After retiring, he worked 25 years for the American Red Cross where he served as director. His passion for sports, coaching, and officiating, eventually led to a career with the SEC, Southland Conference, Metro Conference, and Conference USA in basketball. He was well known as a professional in the arena, but will also be fondly remembered for his antics and colorful personality on the court.
Bob is a longtime resident of the Mississippi Gulf Coast where he was dedicated to his community. He was active in Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce, where he served as President; received the Humanitarian Award through the American Red Cross; and was inducted into the Biloxi Sports Hall of Fame. For several years, he ran a summer camp for the special needs children at Camp Wilkes in Biloxi.
Bob Collins was known and loved by many, as he never met a stranger. His sense of humor, Boston accent and special way with people will be dearly missed.
