Rondo Westbrook Barksdale, Sr.

The coast community was saddened to learn of the recent death of Rondo Westbrook Barksdale, Sr. Mr. Barksdale, age 59, was born on February 6, 1951, in Jackson, MS. and had resided for most of his adult life in Ocean Springs, MS. He was a prominent real estate broker in Jackson County for many years and his expert service in this arena was sought by individuals throughout the state. He had been semi-retired in recent years due to health problems. He was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast who loved boating and all outdoor activities. His passing is well-memorialized in the poem "Requiem" wherein the poet noted "Home is the sailor, home from the sea, and the hunter home from the hill". Mr. Barksdale was the great-great grandson of Congressman Ethelbert Barksdale, a well know journalist and the brother of General William Barksdale who was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. His maternal-great-grandfather was General Richard Griffith, who was killed at the Battle of Savage's Station and was succeeded in command by General Barksdale. Following the example of his distinguished ancestors, Rondo Barksdale volunteered for military duty at a young age and served his country with distinction during the Vietnam War. He was the devoted son of the late Genevieve Wilde Barksdale and Harris Barksdale, Jr. Survivors include a son, Brook (Shayna) Barksdale, one half-sister, Sallie Maxwell and two half-brothers, Dallas Burns and Andy Burns. Burial will be after a private family service. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials be made to the American Heart Association, Greater Southeast Affiliate, P.O. Box 840692, Dallas, TX., 75284-0692. The Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
