Roy Eugene Yates, 59, of Ocean Springs died Saturday, July 15, 2006 after a long illness. Mr. Yates was a resident of the coast since 1985. He served in the United States Army and was a Vietnam Veteran. Mr. Yates was a member of Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Ocean Springs, BPOE #2501, VFW Post 5699, The American Legion, DAV, Sons of the Confederacy, and a past member of the Hibernia Society. He held offices in the Elk's Lodge and the VFW. Mr. Yates was also previous owner of the Jackson County News and Views, The Butt Hutt, and Poppy's Diner. He loved playing darts and was an avid pool player, having won several major tournaments. He loved Mardi Gras and acting, and was an active member of the Elk's and VFW Krewes. Mr. Yates was a loving man who never had an unkind word for anyone, never met a stranger, and always believed in helping others. He loved God and his family, and will be greatly missed by all. Mr. Yates was preceded in death by his parents; William and Ava Yates. He is survived by his brothers; Charles Emory and Tommy Yates, half sister; Anna Lang, previous wife; Barbara Yates, two sons; Steven and Michael Yates, daughter; DiAnna Quinn, wife; Carol Cheek, six step-children; Catherine Born, Donnalee Horner, Richard Allen, Shannon Allen, Tommi-Ellen Elchelberry, and Elizabeth Greholver. Mr. Yates is also survived by two grandchildren; Kristen and Michael Yates, and twenty one step-grandchildren; Daniel and Virginia Born, Michael, Sabra, Miles Reed, Maxwell, and Monroe Horner, Ricky, Unique, Nicholas, Patience, Hannah, Adam Gene, and Zachery Allen, Alexandrea, Amber, Mary, Josephine, Ronald (Beau), Shianne, and Matthew Greholver. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, July 21, 2006 at Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Ocean Springs. An Elk's Memorial Service will be at 1:00 pm prior to the church service. Burial will be at Biloxi National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to one of the following; The University of South Alabama Children's and Women's Hospital, Office of Development, Attn: Ann Cunningham, 1700 Center Street, Mobile, AL, 36604, or Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America Honor & Memorial Gifts, 386 Park Avenue South, 17th Floor, New York, NY, 10016-8804. The Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
