Mrs. Roy “Memaw” Davis Flurry Jones, age 93, of Pascagoula, MS, passed away peacefully surrounded by her children at Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula on Monday, May 27, 2013.
Roy was born on March 19, 1920 in Vancleave, MS. She grew up and spent most of her life in Vancleave, was a lifelong resident of Jackson County and a member of the Vancleave United Methodist Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Norris Jones; her ex-husband Clifton Cooper Flurry, Sr., her parents, Clifton B. Davis Sr. and Nellie Mae Davis; and her identical twin sister and best friend Clyde Davis Steelman; all of Vancleave; and her son-in-law Kent Janca, of Pascagoula; her niece, Johnette Davis Bosarge, of Vancleave; and her great-nephew, John Breckenridge Davis.
Roy grew up on the Davis family homestead on Highway 57 with her parents, aunts, uncles, siblings, and cousins. After high school, Roy and her sister Clyde worked at the Woolen Mill in Moss Point making bathing suits in the winter and coats in the summer. During WWII, the twins worked at Ingalls’s Ship Yard filling in for workers who were fighting in the war. Roy also worked at Keesler Airforce Base or Keesler Field as she called it and Steelman’s Grocery Store in Ocean Springs.
After high school, Roy married Clifton “Cliff” C. Flurry, Sr. and had two children Trudi and Tippy. Roy later married Norris Jones, the love of her life, and had her daughter, Candy.
Norris and Roy owned and operated J&J Enterprise which was J & J Quick Stop and the Dairy Dream in Vancleave until Roy’s retirement in 1985. During her time in Vancleave, Roy enjoyed spending time with family, attending camp meeting in the fall, sewing, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. As a youngster, she and her siblings would enjoy swimming and fishing in Bluff Creek.
Once Roy became a grandmother she was then affectionately known by all as “Memaw”. She loved her family and the name suited her. Memaw was an avid sports fan, especially for the New Orleans Saints. She watched football, basketball, tennis, and golf and was in a bowling league for years. At 93 years of age, Memaw continued to watch sports on TV and socialize on Facebook daily.
Those left to carry on her wonderful spirit include: three children; daughters, Trudi Flurry Dixon, Candy Jones King (& Larry); son, Tippy Flurry.; seven grandchildren: William Shannon Moncrief, Chandra “Chandi” Nicholson (& Casey), CC Flurry III, Brannon Janca (& Amy Jo Preston), Ladd Flurry, Callie King (fiance’ Justin Jones), Gabbie King; and 3 great-grandchildren: Gracie, Addie, and Cooper; brother, Clifton “Parge” Davis; daughter-in-law, Gwen Flurry; niece Vye Steelman (whom she viewed as a daughter); niece La Joyce Davis Ware, Eddie & Toni Hodges (whom she viewed as her adopted family) and many more nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. They will all miss her dearly.
