Ruth Burris Leggett, 96, died Wednesday, October 15, 2014 in Ocean Springs, MS.
Ruth Burris Leggett was born in Madisonville, Tennessee to Rev. James Wylie Burris and Nancy Milligan Burris. She was a graduate of Hiwassee College, Madisonville, Tennessee, and a charter member of Leggett Memorial United Methodist Church in Biloxi.
She came to the Coast in 1950 with her husband, Wesley F. Leggett, who taught electronics at Keesler Air Force Base. Early in life she was an elementary schoolteacher in one-room schoolhouses in east Tennessee. Her greatest passion in life, and one in which she excessed, was being a grandmother.
She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Diane L. Chapman; her son-in-law, Rev. Jerry D. Chapman; and her granddaughter, Cara Anne Chapman.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18 at Leggett Memorial United Methodist Church, 1410 Beach Blvd., Biloxi, with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Leggett Memorial United Methodist Church, 1410 Beach Blvd., Biloxi, MS 39530. Entombment will be in Southern Memorial Park. The Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
No greater tribute can be paid but to say, “She helped a young one along life’s way.”
