Salvador P. "Pete" Caranna, 91, of Gulfport, died Thursday, March 24, 2011 in Gulfport. Mr. Caranna was born in Gulfport, where he was a life long resident. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church. Mr. Caranna was retired form Civil Service at the Navy Base and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the VFW and was a former president of the Board of Directors of the Navy Base Credit Union. He was a skilled craftsman, avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and the Great Smoky Mountains. Mr. Caranna was a devoted family man and will be sadly missed by all. Mr. Caranna was preceded in death by his son, Donald Peter Caranna. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Louise, of Gulfport; three daughters, Linda Leva of Gulfport, Betsy (John) Rettig of Gulfport and Patricia (Pat) Hemme of Montgomery, AL; a daughter-in-law, Linda Caranna; a sister, Catherine Carrubba of Long Beach; eight grandchildren, Alyssa, Jennifer, Silas, Mary Sue, Jonathan, Donnie, Spencer and Kate; nine great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Brandon, Taylor, Tyler, Ashley, Katherine, Elisa, Conner and Ella Grace; and one great-great-granddaughter, Ashlan Brooke. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 10:30am at St. John Catholic Church, Gulfport, where friends may visit one hour before the Mass. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, with military honors by the U.S. Navy. The family prefers memorials to the Alzheimer's Association Mississippi Chapter, 1900 Dunbarton Dr. Suite H, Jackson, MS 39216. Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, 15th St. Gulfport, is in charge of arrangements.
