Saul Edward Holmes Guice passed away Saturday, February 17th, 2018 at the Ocean Springs Hospital after an extended illness. He was one week past his 84th birthday.
He lived a long and happy life on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He was born in 1934 on front beach in Biloxi, and with the exception of a few years away for college and military service, he was never away from the salt water breeze for long. He was the youngest of 8 children and learned early the importance of strong values and hard work.
Saul graduated from Biloxi High School and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1956. After college, he honorably served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. It was here he met the love of his life, Anne Sparks Guice. After a short courtship, the two married in May, 1957. In 1958, after Saul finished his service in the Army, he and Anne began their family together and moved back to Biloxi.
He owned and operated an office supply, furniture and printing business in Biloxi, Mississippi for nearly 30 years while he and Anne raised their four children. Saul's greatest loves were fishing, sailing and spending time with his family. Once his age prevented him from spending time on the Mississippi Sound, his favorite pastime was watching his grandchildren enjoy the waters of the gulf he called home. An avid fisherman, when told by one of his grandchildren it was too cold to catch a fish, it is reported he said he "could break the ice off the river in Biloxi in January and catch a fish."
He is preceded in death by his parents, William Lee and Lee Dicks Guice; sister, Martha Guice Harrison; and four brothers, William L. Guice, Jr., Jacob D. Guice, Stephen L. Guice and Daniel D. Guice.
Saul is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Anne Sparks Guice; his four children and their spouses, Saul E.H. Guice, II (Laura) of Fort Collins, Colorado; Jeffrey S. Guice (Belinda) of Ocean Springs, Mississippi; Lee A. Guice of Henderson, Nevada; and Martha Guice Swiber (Matthew) of Cedar Point, North Carolina; sister, Miriam Guice Howell; brother, John D.W. Guice; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
A visitation for family and friends is planned to celebrate Saul's life on Saturday, February 24th from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at 1208 Iola Road, Ocean Springs, MS 39564.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Ocean Springs Building Fund.
The Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
