Shelley Harrington Cummings

Shelley Harrington Cummings, age 78, of Gulfport, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 26, 2025 at home surrounded by her family.

Shelley was born on April 4, 1946 in Jackson, MS. She attended Murrah High School in Jackson, MS, Emerson College in Boston, MA, and graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1967. Shelley was a former member of the Gulfport Yacht Club and was also a member of P.E.O. Sisterhood.

Jim and Shelley met at Ole Miss. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother and mawmaw. Upon graduating from Ole Miss, she married the love of her life in 1968. Jim and Shelley lived in New York City, NY, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, CA, Dallas, TX, Houston, TX, and retired to their home state of MS. They loved raising their family on the MS Gulf Coast.

Shelley worked as a Speech Pathologist. She loved being with her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Family was most important to Shelley. She also enjoyed watching football and cheering on her Ole Miss Rebels, shopping, and going to church with friends. She loved her church family and was a very active member of Handsboro Presbyterian Church where she served on several committees, her favorite being “mission committee”. Shelley was always smiling and laughing. She loved people and enjoyed life with family and friends.

Shelley was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Cummings; parents, Fuller Augustus “Gus” and Hildegarde McPherson Harrington; and daughter, Mary James Cummings.

Survivors include her daughter, Katie Aschenbach Doucet (Tommy); grandchildren, Lainey Hayes Aschenbach and Chloe Elizabeth Aschenbach; great-grandchildren, Claire Hayes Pique and Blakely Oakes Henderson; and step-grandchildren, John Harrison Doucet, Dawson Doucet, and Louis Doucet.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 7, 2025 at Handsboro Presbyterian Church, 1304 East Pass Road, Gulfport. Friends may visit from 10:30 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery. There will be a reception at Handsboro Presbyterian Church immediately following interment. Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home, 15th Street, Gulfport is honored to serve the Cummings family.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to all Shelley’s friends and family for their love and support, especially her church friends.
