Sidney Asher Harris, Jr.

Sidney Asher Harris, Jr. (Sergent, Army Air Corps) of Vancleave, MS, died Tuesday, February 2, 2011 at the age of 93. Mr. Harris was born July 6, 1917 in New York City. He graduated from High School at the age of 16, finished Brooklyn Law School and passed the New York State Bar Exam at the age of 21, the youngest person to do so at the time. His law practice was interrupted by WWII as he was in the US Army Air Corps from 1941-45. Shortly afterwards, he started working as a sales manager at a picture frame manufacturing company in New Jersey. During that time, he met and married the love of his life, Elisabeth L.S. Kaas, of Amsterdam, Holland. They had four children John, Nancy, Paul, and David and lived in New Rochelle, NY. In the summer of ‘64 at the age of 47 he became part owner and general manager of National Picture & Frame Company and moved the family to Greenwood, MS. He took this bankrupt company made it very profitable, sold his share, and retired at age 52! He had been a Coast resident for more than 20 years. During his lifetime he had continued to practice law, golf, snow ski, boat, bicycle ride, invest and study the stock market, and play blackjack at the casinos to which he was still winning in 2010. He had always taken great pride in his having been a member of the Mississippi and New York Bar Associations, and also in education for his children which resulted in John as engineer, Nancy in advertising, Paul-an MD, and David-an MD. His greatest joy, however, has been his grandchildren, Elisabeth, Dustin, and Brooke. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, all of his children and grandchildren mentioned above, and nephew, Peter A. Harris (Barbara) of Denville, NJ. A Memorial Gathering will be held at the Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home on Friday, February 4, 2011 from 12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m. Interment will be Monday, February 7, 2011 at 12:30 p.m. at Biloxi National Cemetery.
