Vernon Doyle Matthews

Mr. Vernon D. "Scrappy" Matthews, 66, of Biloxi, MS, died Wednesday, January 23, 2008, in Biloxi. Mr. Matthews was born in Clarksdale, MS and had been a resident of the Gulf Coast since 1970. He retired from the Sun Herald as a newspaper photographer after 29 years of employment. He was actively involved as a volunteer with the Humane Society of South Mississippi. Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon "Buddy" and Myrna Matthews. Survivors include his daughter, Kelly King of Excel, AL; grandchildren, Drew Chandler, Sara Beth Chandler, Hampton King and Brock King; and his beloved Golden Retriever, "BJ". Visitation is Tuesday, January 29, 2008, from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. at St. Marks Episcopal Church in Gulfport. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be made to the Humane Society of South Mississippi, 2615 25th Avenue, Gulfport, MS 39501. The Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Homes in Biloxi is in charge of arrangements.
