Vernon J. Murphy, 91, of Gulfport, died Thursday, December 2, 2010 in Pass Christian. Mr. Murphy was born in Gulfport and had been a life long resident of the coast. He was a Baptist. Mr. Murphy was a veteran of WWII having served in the US Army in England, France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and Austria and was in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a life long member of the VFW. Mr. Murphy also retired from Gulfport Paper Company after 25 years of service. He enjoyed riding his bicycle in Gulfport looking for treasures and traveling around the country with his wife. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Daniels Murphy; his parents, Harry and Martha Murphy; his siblings, Marguerite Burns, Gussie Michon, Dan Murphy, Kenneth Murphy, Don Murphy and Ray Murphy. Mr. Murphy is survived by a daughter, Vernona Murphy of Gulfport; a son, Max Williams and his wife Fran of North Pass Christian; three grandchildren; Max Williams, Jr., Leslie Barker and Sarah Leiterman; and six great-grandchildren. The family prefers memorials to the Pink Heart Fund, P.O. Box 1047, Long Beach, MS 39560. The funeral service will be Monday, December 6, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, 15th Street, Gulfport where friends may visit one hour prior to service. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
