Virginia Hewes Spotswood, 98, of Gulfport died Monday, January 24, 2005 in Gulfport. Mrs. Spotswood was born December 1, 1906 in Gulfport and was a lifetime resident of Gulfport and a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church of Gulfport since October of 1919. She was the first Chairwoman of the Women's Circle # 3 of the church.
She worked for many years as secretary and bookkeeper for her brother's Medical Clinic until retirement in about 1966. Even until recent years she was an avid bridge player and enjoyed traveling with friends and family members, and attending musical performances. She was a former member of the Revelers Carnival Association and Community Concerts.
Mrs. Spotswood was preceded in death by her husband Malcolm M. "Happy" Spotswood; her mother, Virginia Mosby Hewes; her father, Harry Layton Hewes; a sister, Katherine Hewes; her brother, Dr. Archibald Clinton Hewes and his wife, Vivian Pringle Hewes.
She is survived by her nephews, Dr. Thomas Finley Hewes of Gulfport, Dr. Archibald Clinton Hewes, Jr. of Philadelphia, PA, and Harry Pringle Hewes and his wife, Marian McManus Hewes, and their children, Virginia's great nieces, Monica Hewes O'Mara, Anne Hewes Wolford, Mary Victoria Hewes, Harriet Clark Hewes and a great-nephew, Harry Pringle Hewes, Jr.
The funeral service will be held Friday, January 28, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. in the Sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Gulfport where friends may visit from 10:00 until the service in the church parlor. Burial will follow the service at Evergreen Cemetery, Gulfport.
