Dr. William Michiel “Mickey” Hawkins, 82, of Gautier, MS passed away November 17, 2024 at Ocean Springs Hospital from complications associated with kidney failure.
He was the son of Wydell and Eber Hawkins of Forest, MS.
A graduate of Forest High School, Mickey attended East Central Junior College before completing his studies at Mississippi State University, where he earned a doctorate in Psychology. At the time of his death, he was a counselor at Volunteer’s in Medicine Health Services in Gautier.
He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Ann Powers; two sons, Patton Hawkins (Traci) of Marble, Arkansas, and Joshua Hawkins (Amanda), of Pearl, MS; grandchildren, Hailey, Madison, Jamie, Lilly, Abigail and Julie Hawkins; and one brother, David Hawkins (Jean) of Forest, MS.
Mickey continued a lineage of military service that dates to the Revolutionary War. He served in Mississippi Air National Guard, Mississippi Army National Guard and United States Army Reserve, where he obtained a rank of Lt. Colonel. He was proud of the fact his sons also served in the military. As well as military service, Mickey also worked as a residential manager for MP&L and taught psychology at Hinds Community College.
His hobbies included gardening, painting, metal detecting, birding and reading. He had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and completed numerous courses on a wide variety of subjects. He was a licensed pilot and flew as his health would allow. His glider was a common sight over the Mississippi Delta while a resident of Greenwood.
At his request his ashes will be scattered near his childhood home by immediate family members. There are no plans for a funeral or memorial service.
Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Homes is honored to serve the family of William Hawkins.
