William P. Lipscomb, Jr., 96, of Gulfport died Friday, May 6, 2016 in Gulfport.
“Bill” or “Billie” as he was known, was born in New Orleans, LA on January 2, 1920 to William Pipes Lipscomb, Sr. and Emily Amanda Collins Lipscomb. Billie lived his first 15 years in New Orleans. The family moved to Vancleave in 1935 and resided at the Ramsay property where they farmed for a number of years. Billie met Tina Wauwesia Nix in Vancleave and they married 5 years later just before he entered the Army Air Corps. Bill had worked as a welder at Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula and Delta Shipyard in New Orleans for 3 years where they built cargo ships for England before leaving for his military service. After 3 years of service, 2 of which were spent in Africa, Italy, and Austria, Bill decided to study education and went to Hattiesburg to study at USM. Bill’s work in education took him and Wesa to Broome School in Purvis and finally to MS Gulf Coast Community College. He served first as Dean of Students, then Dean at Perkinston, then as Executive Dean (Vice-President) at Jefferson Davis Community College for 25 years. Five children were born of this union and all entered some phase of the educational field. All hold Master’s degrees or higher. Moving to Gulfport in 1965, the family has resided in the same house which they built at that time. Tina and Bill have been married for 74 years and for many years they were active in the activities at Trinity United Methodist Church.
Bill was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Dale Lipscomb; his parents, William P. Lipscomb, Sr. and Emily Amanda Collins Lipscomb; sisters, Louise Lipscomb Ramsay and Lorena Martha Lipscomb Kern; brothers, Jerome Hilburn Lipscomb, Thomas Burdette Lipscomb and John Gladney Lipscomb; and granddaughter, Stacie Doyal.
Survivors include his wife, Tina W. Nix Lipscomb; his daughter, Cheryl Lipscomb Copponex and her husband, Shannon; three sons, David Allen Lipscomb and his wife, Judi, John Lynn Lipscomb and Dr. William P. Lipscomb, III and his wife, Sherri; grandchildren, Sharron Leigh Lipscomb, David Allen Lipscomb, Jr, Michael Copponex, John Copponex, Alicia Steward, and Todd Harlan; and great grandchildren, Zachary Harlan, Caleb Harlan, Madyson Doyal, Ty Doyal, Christian Steward, Olivia Steward, and Jacob Steward.
Bill and all members of his immediate family spent many years in education and touched the lives of many.
The family prefers memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association, Mississippi Chapter, 1900 Dunbarton Drive, Suite H, Jackson, MS 39216.
The visitation will be Tuesday, May 10, 2016 from noon until 2:00 p.m. at Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home, 15th Street Gulfport. A private family graveside service will follow the visitation.
