William Rutledge Lockwood, M.D., aged 89, passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2018, after a prolonged illness.
After serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, he graduated from the University Of Tennessee School Of Medicine in 1957. He completed his Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University Of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi in 1961. Dr. “Bill” Lockwood settled in Jackson to raise his family and spent his career as a Professor of Medicine at UMMC (1962-1985). He was also Associate Chief of Staff for Research at the MS Veterans Administrative Center (1968-1973). After retiring, he moved to Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Dr. Bill was an avid bird watcher and enjoyed boating and fishing. He was an enthusiastic artist, writer, and musician. He enjoyed woodworking; especially his hand-crafted violins, and a harpsicord for St. Andrew’s Episcopal Cathedral in Jackson.
Raised in Summit, MS, and preceded in death by his wife Mary Lou (Butler) Lockwood, he is survived by two daughters, Margaret L. Davis of Mobile, AL, and Anna B. Lockwood of Ocean Springs, MS; three grandchildren, Alexander A. Alston IV of Ridgeland, MS, Mary T. Winder of Alpharetta, GA, and Elise L. Rogers of Ocean Springs, MS; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 705 Rayburn Avenue, Ocean Springs. Friends may visit one-hour prior. Interment will follow at the Biloxi National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial gifts be made to the Pipe Organ Fund at St. John’s Episcopal Church.
