William H. (Bill) Winterton III, 83, formerly of Rome, NY, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2023, at his home in Pascagoula, MS with his loving wife, Gladys, by his side.
Bill was born in Rome, NY on September 22, 1939, the son of William and Gwendolyn Winterton. He was united in marriage to the former Gladys R. Shortt on November 8, 1975, in Remsen, NY and has been a loving husband and father for the past 47 years.
Early in his career, Bill worked for Al Evans, a painting contractor in Rome, NY. In 1965 he started his own business, Winterton Painting, Inc. As a successful businessman, Bill started as a residential contractor and later grew the business to include large commercial jobs. He was a member of the Painting & Decorating Association of America and retired in 1999, when he sold the business. He was very proud to know it has been successfully carried forward.
With his father by his side, Bill purchased and developed Trail’s End Campground in Cold Brook, NY. They worked to build the campsite, RV park, beach, and restaurant. He sold that business in 1981.
Bill enjoyed being outdoors and one of his passions was golf. He played at Teugega Country Club for many years and had the skill and good luck to make two holes in one on hole #7 & #15. He was a member of the NY State Seniors golf club and enjoyed playing all over NY State as well as Florida and Mississippi.
His other passion was boating, especially on the St. Lawrence River. He truly loved being Captain of “The Enjoy”, his 40’ Pacemaker. The memories with his friends and family on the river were very special to him.
His latest and greatest passion was for wood turning. He became a member of the Lighthouse Woodturners group and made beautiful bowls, platters, and wooden Christmas ornaments in his workshop. He made unique gifts for his family and friends that are cherished.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Winterton of Pascagoula, MS; one son, Todd Winterton, Nazareth, PA; four daughters, Tammy (James) Roberts of Remsen, NY, Tracy Winterton of Rome, NY, Tina Shortt of Manlius, NY and Darcie Crew of Pascagoula, MS.
